Happy New Year! I have been quiet on the blog, as you may have noticed. Life threw me a few proverbial “curve balls” back in November, and then the whole Holidays thing tore through…anyways, I have much to share! I thought I’d start with this super fun modeling portfolio session I shot a few days ago. These two boys are models. Is it obvious? We had so much fun downtown Portland, and despite the fact that the temps were in the 40s, these boys rocked shorts and flip flops. I truly had a blast with their great personalities and well, the super handsome part didn’t make it any harder… Keep your eye out for more sessions blogged soon. I have two other kid model sessions to share as well as an amazing family session that I shot in San Francisco last month. As always, your comments are always welcome. This way I know I’m not posting to the air.

Sometimes elements of a session line up in such a way that pure magic occurs. I shot this session on the nicest day in October. The day we were supposed to shoot, it poured rain. But I had envisioned THIS light for this particular shoot. She was one of my senior models this year and we had talked about sunshine, fall vibe…And well, we got it. I click so well with this beautiful gal. We are a lot alike. I can’t wait to see her follow her passion. “S,” Thank you for letting me capture you on the edge of your adult life. You rock.

It has been a whirlwind senior season! I so love photographing this age. This beautiful gal was no exception. We just cracked up the whole time. I keep wondering why I didn’t have this kind of style sense when I was 17! Seriously, these young women are way ahead of the game.

I was on the verge of postponing this session because of the rain. It had, by turns, drizzled and poured steadily all day. Those of you who know me know that I am so California: I stay in when it rains. But she was not bothered. So we went ahead, and guess what? It stopped raining for the entire duration of the session. I didn’t miss the sun one bit. Ok, maybe ONE bit. Those sunflowers totally made up for it. And so did her unbelievable eyes. WHOA. Those are the kind of eyes I was sort of hoping to be born with, you know?

At the end of the session I snapped a couple mother/daughter portraits. I won’t name names but at least two of us were tearing up during those…

“C,” I know you will have an amazing year. Thanks for choosing me to document this moment in your life!

So, I grew up with only brothers and a load of male cousins. It was always me and a bunch of boys. I’ve always felt super comfortable being sort of “one of the guys.” So it was totally fun hanging out with Cameron. Especially out on kayaks. Yes, we kayaked and photographed, and chilled on a sunny day. I wish I got to shoot from a kayak EVERY session. I think they might just have gotten me into a new sport.

On another note, I wanted to process this session as if it had been shot with film. Sometimes I miss the film grain, the dreamy quality of it. So, I thought I’d just make these pics look like film. I love them. And did I mention how fun it was shooting from a kayak? Thanks guys! Cameron, I can’t wait to check out your car when it’s all done.

In Spanish, giving birth is literally translated “to give to light.” I love that image of a woman giving her baby to the light. It’s lovely to be able to photograph an expectant family in such lovely light. I was so thrilled that my cousin (2nd cousin, if you want to be technical), picked me to photograph this amazing time in his life. That they flew in from Sacramento was even more awesome. Ok, so he had a work convention to go to, but still. I like that kind of multi-tasking. David and Alisa, I loved photographing you two on the verge of becoming parents. I know that your baby will look at these pictures later and know how much he is already loved!

I am a natural light shooter. I have never really liked using flash. But I have this cousin, Andrew Miller, who is an unbelievably talented photographer and a master of off-camera lighting. Once I started checking out his work, I started getting stoked on branching out and breaking out of my comfort zone of shooting backlit golden light. And then I get this call, a senior girl who wants portraits…at night. I say yes, yeah, let’s do it. So I bought a stand for my flash and then went out for some night practice. I shot photos of my cousin Tony skateboarding at night. I shot photos of a friend on a bridge at night. And then, on a gloriously warm Portland night, I shot these. They are definitely the most unique senior portraits I’ve ever done. Now, I will never leave my comfort zone all together, but a little branching out? I’m down.

What a lovely, magical session. When I shoot senior sessions, I aim to have each session be totally unique to each person. The feel of a session can vary so greatly, from the last one I posted, more urban cool, to this one, which is ethereal and almost had a magical feeling with that golden light in the dark woods. I half expected a fairy to come flitting by. This gal is the third sibling that I’ve had the privilege to photograph at the start of senior year. Her brothers are both in college now, and it is now her turn to shine. “R,” I have a feeling that you will have a fantastic year!
